Who Hears

The night closed in around me. The smell of rain freshened air filled the night while stars sparkled down on the sopping wet world. Through the silence of the night, I heard a loud crack.

What was that, I wondered.

As I considered the options, I guessed it was probably an old tree falling in the woods. After all, with all that rain, the leaves were hanging particularly heavy. That little bit of extra weight on a rotten, leaning tree could be the straw that broke the camel’s back… or the drop that felled said dead, rotten tree. It might have been a cow stomping around that made the noise, but let’s just stick with the tree, because I’m the one writing this, and I say it was a tree, so there.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? That question has been asked a bazillion times. However, I would like to propose a different question. How can we be sure that no one was there to hear the tree fall?

Sometimes in the dark nights of life, we may wonder if our cries make a sound. Is there really anyone there to hear us? Does anyone know or care that our lives are falling apart?

The Bible tells us that not even a sparrow falls to the ground without the Creator’s notice. We, being made in the very image of our Creator and having His breath of Life in our lungs, are far more valuable to Him than a little bird. (Matthew 10:29-31)

In the story of the Exodus, when Moses was called at the burning bush to lead Israel out of the bondage of Egypt, God revealed something to Moses.

Exodus 3:7 “And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;”

Time after time throughout the Bible, God found people when they were helpless and alone. Even when no one else was around to hear their cries, God was there. And He is still here, hearing the cries of His children when they call to Him.

If a tree falls in the woods, its Creator knows, and He hears. When a child of God calls out to Him, He hears that son or daughter of His.
